Project Description:
- Design, develop and finance a state-of-the-art translational research center for the Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i to house research and clinical enterprises, including an approximately 1,000 space parking garage.
Project Challenge:
- Help the University achieve its goal of becoming a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center by developing a cutting-edge research facility while creating a warm and inviting clinical facility, all within the context of native Hawaiian culture.
New Perspective Solution:
- Overcome existing development issues, including parking and inadequate infrastructure.
- Respond and provide the University with ideas and potential solutions in response to project scope changes.
- Maximize the beauty of the site’s setting while being respectful of the existing architectural vocabulary and context of the neighborhood.
- Identify and establish relationships with all constituencies through constant and open lines of communication.
- Address all issues with an open mind with goal of reaching consensus with disparate groups.
- Proactively become a member of the community to better understand issues, concerns and cultural differences and approaches.
Today:
- Project design is under way and leases are being negotiated for a 350,000 square foot Cancer Center. Construction is slated to start 4th quarter 2008.
